Parkland Pulse Expanding

December 16th, 2010

Parkland Pulse has purchased WA Grain and Pulse Solutions in Innisfail, Alta.In a press release, general manager Gilles Fransoo states the purchase will assist the local company in its orgination and processing of peas and other pulse crops from Alberta.

“This move will also provide Parkland Pulse the opportunity to expand into the Alberta feed grains market with Saskatchewan originated commodities.”

The expansion increases the operation’s export capacity to 2,000 metric tonnes per week. Fransoo indicated the company is looking for an additional annual export of 80,000 tonnes.

“The growth from both processing and logistics is needed as our exports continue to strip avialablel line times from our current facilities,” Fransoo stated.

The company is also looking to increase its international profile with a second initiative, the opening of Parkland Pulse Trade (Qingdao Ltd.), based in Qingdao, China. This initiative has a goal of providing overseas customers with Chinese origin beans.

Parkland Pulse is a private, family owned company with four processing facilities in North Battleford, Cut Knife and Swift Current.

Things are looking more positive for Parkland in 2009

March 10th, 2009

After some very heavy losses in 2008 Parkland Pulse’s start in 2009 is fairly positive. In the second half of 2008 there were three major price drops which caused a lot of trouble for Parkland Pulse in China. The first drop was the deflation of the Canadian Dollar in August 2008. That was then compounded by a larger crop and pressure on lower prices from line companies.  Finally, just when prices seemed to have bottomed out in October the economic crisis became official and prices continued to fall. In about a four month time peroid the price of peas to China went from 550usd/mt to 280usd/mt. Parkland Pulse suffered heavy losses from buyers defaulting and renegotiating contracts. Having survived such difficult times 2009 looks much more positive. Sales volumes are back to normal. Old customers are buying again and new customers are turning up in new markets. Most importantly the price has been fairly stable and contracts are being executed.
